Serenity

The husband made me some Beer Brats for dinner, and we watched one of our all-time favorite movies while we ate. Serenity is possibly one of the best movies about what we consider Libertarianism that has ever been made. Beer brats, Heineken, and a great movie. Truly, it's a little slice of heaven.

The theme behind the entire story, as it was the TV Series Firefly first, is a former "rebel" against the Planetary Alliance, buys a ship after the war and plans to travel and make money. In the series we never really get the overview of why the rebels rebelled, but in the movie, we get it, at the very beginning. There is a class room and the teacher explains how many ships had to leave earth and find a new home because the planet could no longer sustain the numbers of people living upon it... Americans and Chinese. The traveled far and found another star system that had habitable planets and did terraforming for the rest. She speaks of the peace and prosperity brought by the Planetary alliance and asks why the rebels could possibly want to shun their offer of protection and promises of wealth and peaceful existence.

One little girl speaks out and says it's "because we meddle."

People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

If ever there was a shot across the bow of progressive liberalism, that is it. Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Harry Reid, and Barak Obama... we don't like you because you meddle and you haven't the right. So get out of my life or I'll go all Captain Tightpants on you and bring my Reaver friends.

And to Joss Whedon who has written some of the best dialogue ever in screen history, big or small, I respect you, man. Well done.

I LOVE SERENITY AND FIREFLY!! I have all of it on DVD, and can even watch it streaming on NetFlix (which I've done recently, because I loaned out my Firefly DVD's). I absolutely love Mal's spirit!! Great post!
